How to Inflate & Deflate your Exped Mat

How to Inflate & Deflate your Exped Mat

Depending on your mat (and also your personal preference) there are a couple of ways to inflate your Exped sleeping mat.
Whether you have an Exped mat with an integrated pump or a mattress that uses a Schnozzel Pumpbag you can find how to inflate your mattress below.

Inflating with an Integrated Pump

If your Exped mattress has a hand symbol near the inflation valve (pictured above), then your mattres should have an 'integrated pump'. This is a small self-inflating section that is used to inflate the whole mattress.
This method is simple and moisture-free as is doesn't require you to blow any air into the mat with your lungs.

Steps to inflate:

  1. Unroll the mattress and lay it out on the ground.
  2. Open the inflation valve at the top of the mattress.
  3. Let the foam recover and inflate the pump section of the mat.
  4. Cover and seal the open valve with the palm of your hand, and push down.
This pushes the air through the one-way valve, into the mattress.
  5. Lift your hands off the mat and allow the foam to re-inflate the pump section.
  6. Repeat steps 4 & 5 until the mattress is inflated to your desired pressure..
  7. Close the inflation valve.

Inflating with a Schnozzel Pumpbag

The Schnozzel Pumpbag is a quick and simple option for inflating any Exped mat and is often included with some mats as the primary pump.
This method also doesn't require lung-power and can be used to inflate any Exped mat, including the mats with the integrated pump described above.

Steps to inflate:

  1. Unroll the mattress and lay it out on the ground.
  2. Open the inflation valve at the top of the mattress.
  3. Connect the Schnozzel Pumpbag to the flat valve for inflation.
  4. Fill the bag with air. You can do this by:
    1. Billowing the bag back and forth to force air in through the opening
    2. Halving the opening and blowing from about 30cm away. This blows air in as well as pulling air from around.
  5. Grab the opening of the bag and close it. Then roll it down 2-3 times.
  6. Push down to inflate, squeezing the air out of the bag and into the mattress.
  7. When all the air is expelled, unroll the bag and repeat steps 4-6 as many times as required to inflate to your desired pressure.
  8. Remove the Pumpbag from the inflation valve.
  9. Close the valve.

Deflating your Exped mat

There are many right ways to roll and pack away your Exped mat, but this is the quickest and easiest way to deflate your sleeping mat.

  1. Open the deflate valve. A lot of air will immediately come out of the mat.
  2. Starting from the bottom of the mat, fold the mattress in sections to quickly push out large amounts of air. (see above image) This will quickly expel most of the air.
  3. Unfold the mat.
  4. Fold the mat lengthways into the approximate width of the bag (usually in thirds).
  5. Roll the mat, starting from the base. Keep the roll firm as you push out the remaining air.
  6. Put the rolled mat into the stuff sack.
